The aforementioned pipeline system enables Italy to supply natural gas from the Algerian gas fields, guaranteeing approximately one third of the national demand.
The underwater section of this pipeline system, laid between the Tunisian coast (Cap Bon area) and the Italian coast (Sicily-Mazara del Vallo) is owned by Transmediterranean Pipeline Company Ltd, and consists of five pipelines of 155 km in length and reaching a water depth of 610 metres.
